3 Reasons Why You Need Shed Insurance

Want to protect your shed from theft and damage? You’re going to need shed insurance
Imagine building a tough new shed, fresh from the steel manufacturer, solid as a rock and rich in colour…

…and then it blows down in a storm…

…or collapses on your car.

What if you don’t even make it that far? What if some punk kid steals your shed materials from the construction site?

If you’re thinking of building a fresh new shed, it’s worth investing in some shed insurance, too. Insurance can offer peace of mind when it comes to harsh weather, natural catastrophes, and even visual or structural inadequacies.

#1. Ahrens Sheds offer shed warranties… but all warranties have conditions

You know you’re getting a quality steel shed when the manufacturer is willing to provide fifteen years’ warranty.

BlueScope Steel has been one of Australia’s favourite steel manufacturers for over 50 years. We source all of our steel products from BlueScope Steel, including our Colorbond® and Zincalume® covers, garages, and sheds.

BlueScope Steel offer a 15 year warranty starting from the date of installation, including cover for corrosion of all products used for roofing and cladding.

However, it’s important to remember that all warranties have conditions. Eligibility for warranties will depend on a number of factors including location, product, and usage. For example, a shed built on unstable or heritage protected land would not be covered because it should never have been built there in the first place.

Here are two examples of warranties from BlueScope Steel, one for a Zincalume residential shed and one for a Colorbond residential shed.

#2. Our distributors can ensure you get insured

Our distributors won’t let you walk away with a sub-par, uninsurable shed.

Ahrens Sheds is ShedSafe Accredited, meaning we had to provide evidence that the engineering and design of our sheds are appropriate for all our customers’ site-specific uses.

Insurance companies won’t insure steel buildings that are unstable, in a high-risk area, or against the Building Codes of Australia.

Our nationwide team can provide expert advice based on the location of the building site, the topography of the land, building codes, and more.

We can ensure that the shed you’re getting is right for the wind and weather conditions in the area, plus provide advice for the shielding of your shed.

For example, we wouldn’t recommend building a shed out in the open in a high wind area. Sheds are better built in shielded areas, for example around trees or houses, where they are protected from harsh weather.

Our distributors would also provide alternatives for shed owners living within 500 metres of the ocean. Your distributor will recognise the need for stronger, salt resistant materials or a different sealer which might cost more but will help your shed get insured.

We go extra mile and don’t promise sheds or steel buildings we can’t provide or support. Our distributors will discuss your block of land with you and ensure your shed is covered.

#3. Cover notes can protect your shed in the wait time for insurance

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your building site and discovering the materials have all been stolen.

There’s only one thing that could make it worse – realising your insurance hasn’t taken effect and your insurer won’t cover the cost of the stolen goods.

When taking out shed insurance, we recommend getting a cover note on your existing property to encompass the shed kit until its built. Construction site theft is on the rise – the average value of materials stolen is $2,009, or $1,156 for vandalism.

A cover note will ensure your shed is covered before it’s even built.

Contact your insurance provider and tell them when the shed is arriving and the total cost, then ask for a cover note so the materials are protected against damage, vandalism, and theft.

Without a cover note, the insurance company can’t cover you if something happens to your shed before your insurance is finalised.

You love your shed… so make sure to protect it!

Your shed is home to all your tools, your cars and a variety of equipment. It would be devastating to see it vandalised, robbed or suffer from any damage with nothing in place to protect you.

When building a shed, it’s crucial to take out a cover note and insurance for your shed. Without insurance, you’re putting a lot of money on the line with no assurance or cover.
